Fernhoff

In the Oakland Hills, the Fernhoff project focuses on a playful lifestyle while addressing the unique challenges of a sloped landscape. We included covered gardening space, a custom built play area, and a pool incorporated into the hillside. Preserving the property’s natural slope took priority in the use space of the land. Rather than forcing the terrain into submission, we embraced its contours, creating tiered planting areas and integrating elements that stabilize the soil while blending seamlessly with the surroundings.

Privacy was another key focus, achieved through the careful placement of non-invasive bamboo. These elegant, low-maintenance plants form a lush, living screen that softly frames the property while maintaining an open, airy feel. For the creation of the play space, in lieu of a traditional lawn, the project features Kurapia, a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance ground cover that offers a vibrant green aesthetic without the need for constant mowing. This innovative choice reduces water consumption and upkeep, making it an eco-friendly and visually striking alternative to conventional turf.
Fernhoff is a testament to the possibilities of sustainable, thoughtful design in challenging environments. The result is a landscape that feels both modern and organic, offering its owners a private haven to enjoy the natural beauty of the Oakland Hills.
